How do I join MBGH?
Joining is easy. To join you simply complete a form indicating which programs and services you wish to use. You also must agree that:

As a Memphis Business Group on Health member, I hereby agree to support the goals and objectives of this organization for a period of not less than one year by remitting a yearly payment based upon the total number of covered employees represented by the membership and current fee schedule.

There are two levels of membership: supporter and comprehensive. Supporter members attend membership meetings and conferences and participate in any MBGH activities open to all members. A password protected Supporter web page keeps Supporters up-to-date on legislative/regulatory changes, local Memphis health news, and other issues such as trends in health care costs and benefits. Supporters receive federal legislative updates from the National Business Coalition on Health and a complimentary subscription to Business & Health magazine.

In addition to all the benefits of Supporter membership, comprehensive members are eligible to access the specific programs and services provided by MBGH. These include group purchase arrangements, utilization management services, user groups, and participation in and information from member surveys. These members may also call upon MBGH staff to provide member-specific technical assistance regarding a variety of health benefit issues such as individual contract negotiations, claims analysis, benefit design, establishment of health promotion activities, and other benefit, management and clinical issues. Comprehensive members have access to the Members Only, password protected web pages. Comprehensive members pay based on their number of employees in the greater Memphis area.

Are there any employers that do not qualify for membership?
MBGH welcomes employers of all sizes. Most members have over 100 employees in the Memphis area. Also, current members self-insure their health benefits, although this is not a requirement for membership.

Because MBGH serves as the voice of health care purchasers, and there is the strong desire not to create conflicts of interest in pursuing our mission, hospitals, physicians, other health care providers, brokers, insurance companies and insurance agents are not eligible for membership. These organizations may apply to become an affiliate of MBGH.

Do I have to participate in all MBGH programs and services if I am a member?
No. You may choose just to be a member of MBGH and reap the many basic membership benefits. Or, you may choose to participate in one or more of our programs and services. You only pay for these programs and services if you use them. You may add these at any time during your membership.

What do I get for my membership?
As with most organizations, you get the most out of your membership if you are actively involved. Networking with other Memphis-area employee benefit and human resource managers is available at bi-monthly membership meetings and by using the Annual Membership Directory. MBGH staff, which includes clinicians as well as health care managers, is always available to research issues for you. Our Members Only Web Site keeps you up to date with the ever-changing Memphis health care scene, MBGH activities, and recent legislative and regulatory issues. Through our value based purchasing initiatives, members have access to performance measures for Memphis area health plans, hospitals and physicians. These are just the basic benefits of joining MBGH. You can also access any of our programs and services and get even more value for your membership.

What type of data would I have access to if I were a member of MBGH?
Through our value based purchasing initiatives, MBGH is building a significant database on Memphis area hospitals and health plans and, in the near future, physicians. This database includes information on costs, charges, severity/adjusted mortality and complication rates, HEDIS performance measures, and data submitted directly to MBGH by area providers. Information on physician practice satisfaction will soon be available. MBGH also has data on out-of-area health plans and hospitals. MBGH staff not only analyzes and produces reports from this data to meet the general needs of our membership but can also respond to member-specific requests for information. As a member, you will have access to all of this data to assist you in making your network selection and negotiation decisions.

Is MBGH an insurance company? Broker? Third party administrator?
MBGH is not an insurance company, broker or third party administrator. MBGH does not offer, itself, any insurance products. MBGH is, in reality, the employers who are its members. Many of these employers have brokers and all have third party administrators. MBGH does not replace the need for these types of organizations. MBGH’s relationship is directly with its employer members. However, if a member wants MBGH to work closely with their broker and/or TPA that is easily arranged.
